The project

In this project we inventory Dutch artefacts made from osseous and keratinous material. The artefacts are incorporated in an accessible online database (BoneArt) and analysed on a basic level. After finishing the project all specialists will have access to BoneArt.

The study provides a solid foundation for future research into bone artefacts.

Objects to be included

No sharply defined periods are used to determine which objects are incorporated in the inventory, but the emphasis lies on the period from the Mesolithic to 1850 AD.

The inventory includes
  • Artefacts:  objects deliberately manufactured and / or processed by humans, and animal remains clearly showing anthropogenic traces of use.
  • Production waste: animal remains with traces of anthropogenic processing that can clearly be related to the manufacturing or processing of artefacts.

 The data comes from
  • Finds and descriptions from reports of development-led archaeology (the so-called ‘Malta reports’) implemented since 1997, focusing on the period 2005-2017.
  • Relevant literature from before 1997.
  • Important unpublished finds from depots or museums.
We also include unpublished studies.

Types of material:

Bone, antler, ivory, horn, tortoiseshell, baleen, hoff, tooth and shell

Output of the project

  • An extensive online database comparable to WOODAN that can be accessed via this website.
  • A catalogue of bone and antler artefacts from the Netherlands,
  • A publication in the Nederlandse Oudheden Reeks (NAR-series) of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
* Achtergrondfoto betreft een versierd elandgewei uit de collectie van het Rijksmuseum.
